Atonement Lutheran Church, Wyomissing

  • Bach - Orchestral Suite No. 3
  • Bach - Magnificat
  • Bach - Cantata No. 80, Ein Feste Burg

October 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses, which gave birth to a new kind of church music, brought to Berks County when German immigrants settled in the area. Of all their contributions to our local community, nothing was more important to these newcomers than their Lutheran faith – and there is no greater Lutheran music than the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. In commemoration of this anniversary, the RSO collaborates with the Vox Philia chamber choir for some of Bach's most memorable works--his Magnificat, written for his first Christmas in Leipzig, the Ein Feste Burg cantata, a setting of Luther's most famous hymn; and his Orchestral Suite No. 3, rarely performed by modern orchestras.

Vox Philia is a premiere chamber choir located in Berks County, and since 2013, the choir has been achieving regional recognition, performing works from a wide range of musical periods and styles with annual concerts in both the spring and winter. The name of the choir comes from the word “Vox” referring to the voice, and “Philia,” referring to one of four Greek words for love, specifically, the love between friends.
